India has announced a 15-member squad for the Under-19 Asia Cup, with Virender Sehwag’s son Aryaveer and Rahul Dravid’s son Anvay earning places. Lakshya Raichandani will captain the side, while Yashvardhan Chouhan will be his deputy. The tournament will be held in Muscat, Oman from November 4 to 14. India are in Group A with Nepal, Pakistan and the UAE, while Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka form Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. India’s recent form has been strong. The youth side beat Australia 2-0 in the four-day series and 3-0 in the one-day series in September-October. Earlier, they won the two-match four-day series against Sri Lanka 1-0 but lost the one-day series 2-1. Those results show that the team has momentum, though there is still room for improvement in the 50-over format. Raichandani was India’s leading performer in the four-day series against Australia, scoring 250 runs in three innings, including a superb 240-run knock in the first match. Chouhan was India’s best batter in the one-day series, scoring 176 runs in two innings with a century in the second match. Aryaveer scored 28, 47 and 34 in the one-day series, while Anvay, the first-choice wicketkeeper, made 38 and 9. Anvay had earlier impressed with 87 off 67 balls in the last one-day match against Sri Lanka. The squad includes Lakshya Raichandani as captain, Aryaveer Sehwag, VK Vineet, Yashvardhan Chouhan as vice-captain, Kushagra Ojha, Arjun Rajput, Manal Chauhan, Anvay Dravid as wicketkeeper, Rajat Baghel as wicketkeeper, V. Yashveer, Aaryan Savsani, Mohit Ulva, Kavya Patel, Shavin Vinod and Ishan Sud. The selection offers a mix of batting, bowling and wicketkeeping options, and the team management will hope that the recent form of the key players carries into the tournament. Much of the spotlight will be on Aryaveer and Anvay because of their famous fathers, but both players will be judged on their own performances. Aryaveer has shown useful consistency in the recent one-day series, while Anvay brings both wicketkeeping value and the ability to score quickly. The captain and vice-captain, meanwhile, have the responsibility of guiding a young side through a short, high-pressure tournament. In Group A, the match against Pakistan is likely to attract the most attention, but India cannot afford to take Nepal or the UAE lightly. In Group B, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka appear to be strong contenders, with Afghanistan also capable of causing problems. Oman’s conditions may favour disciplined bowling, and fitness in the heat will be important. India’s chances look promising on paper, but youth cricket is unpredictable. The team will need to reduce mistakes in the field, build partnerships in the middle overs and maintain discipline with the ball. If Raichandani, Chouhan, Aryaveer, Anvay and the bowling attack perform consistently, India can be a serious title contender.
