Asia's Cricket Calendar Squeeze: National Windows, League Expansion and the Limits of the Player
Asian cricket's biggest structural problem is not on the field but in the calendar. The continent has five full-member boards and several associate members, each with its own broadcast deals, domestic structures and franchise competitions. Layered on top of the ICC Future Tours Programme sit the Asian Cricket Council's events, bilateral series driven by revenue needs, and a franchise-league calendar that increasingly overlaps across countries. Each layer defends its own window, and the cost of that collision is absorbed by the player: compressed multi-format tours, no warm-up space, rising injury risk and declining technical sharpness. Climate adds a second constraint — monsoon, extreme heat and cyclones routinely shorten series, and the revenue shortfall is often recovered by adding more matches, which deepens the original problem. Expanding global events and a longer qualification path raise the same question: there are more matches to play than there are windows to play them in, and second-tier programmes such as A-team tours and regional qualifiers are the first to be cut because they generate no direct income. Governance is the real bottleneck: windows are negotiated bilaterally and politically rather than allocated transparently, so no board has an incentive to give up ground. The remedies are unglamorous but clear — a publicly fixed multi-year window allocation with protected rest periods, a workload framework that applies before injury rather than after, weather and logistics treated as central planning inputs, and second-tier competitions placed in a protected category. Asia has the resources to do all of this; it needs a calendar designed around the sport rather than around short-term revenue.
